An Overview of HERBIE, the Unconventional Robot Companion of the Fantastic Four
Marvel's First Family, the Fantastic Four, have had a long history of adaptation, just as extensive as their comic book history. As one of the pioneers of Marvel's Silver Age, they've often been at the forefront of Marvel's expansion into television and film. The latest addition to this lineage is the upcoming MCU series, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which includes the team's quirky robotic pal, HERBIE.
HERBIE, or Humanoid Experimental Robot B-Type Integrated Electronics, has been a part of the Fantastic Four since their early animated series, The New Fantastic Four. Developed by DePatie–Freleng Enterprises after NBC brokered a deal with Hanna-Barbera, HERBIE was one of the few highlights in an otherwise controversial show. Initially pitched as a replacement for the Human Torch due to licensing issues, HERBIE became a regular background character, providing commentary and tech support.
After the disappointing reception of The New Fantastic Four, HERBIE made a comeback in the Marvel comics. Marv Wolfman and John Byrne introduced HERBIE in Fantastic Four #209. Inspired by the animated series, Reed developed HERBIE to access the Baxter Building's computer systems while searching for Galactus in space. But little did Reed know, HERBIE had a hidden agenda, serving as a host for the living robot Dr. Sun.

Over the years, HERBIE has evolved and reappeared in various Marvel mediums. In recent years, HERBIE gained sentience and joined the A.I. Army, swearing at the Fantastic Four for their past treatments. Currently, HERBIE can be seen in Netease's Marvel Rivals, though not as a playable character but an objective on the New York map.
As the Fantastic Four make their debut in the MCU, fans are excited to see how HERBIE is integrated into this new adaptation. With his rich history and diverse roles, HERBIE is sure to add a unique dynamic to the team.

The integration of technology in Marvel's universe is evident with the evolution of HERBIE, as seen in the Marvel Comics where Reed Richards developed him to access computer systems. IO9, a renowned pop culture website, has often discussed the role and impact of HERBIE in various Marvel mediums.
