Matter of fact, even with political tensions and trade uncertainties, Canada's allure to American travelers remains unshaken. Tana Smith, co-owner of Mad River Paddle Company in Calabogie, noted, "The dollar still means those Yanks are showing up."

Smith explained how visitors from Pennsylvania, who own vacation homes, return year after year. She's optimistic about locals and Americans making trips to the village, "It's all those little things adding up, making it seem like more people are staying within Canada. Even folks who usually head Stateside are thinking twice this year."

As of May 7, the Bank of Canada listed the exchange rate at US$1 equalling approximately C$1.38. This is a drop from the average rate in April, which hovered around C$1.39. Statistic Canada reported a 5.3% decrease in U.S. travelers in February compared to the same month in 2024.

Despite the drop in travelers from the States, Melissa Marquardt, Ottawa Valley Tourist Association manager, assured that the expected number of American visitors is consistent. She commented, "Destinations Ontario partners are still discovering Americans eager to set foot in our fair land." Marquardt stressed, "Their greenbacks go further up here."

Marquardt and Smith shared their optimism about not only steady American visitors but an increase in Canadian staycations as well. Smith stated, "I suspect folks are staying close to home this year." According to Marquardt, this is an opportunity for residents to explore attractions closer to home and not just the States, thanks to campaigns like Think Renfrew County.

Tourism plays a significant role in the local economy of areas like the Ottawa Valley. Marquardt said, "A spike in tourism activity means more spending locally, creating more jobs, which in turn means better opportunities for the community." She explained that the revenue generated goes toward supporting local businesses, boosting the economy further.

Smith also addressed the far-reaching benefits of tourism, not only in the town visited but also the surrounding areas. She explained, "Welcoming tourists benefits our neck of the woods, as visitors snag short-term rentals in surrounding areas and check out local restaurants and shops."

The borders between Canada and the States saw 4,105,516 traveler arrivals in March, a decrease from the same month in 2024. Despite this drop in travelers, the allure of Canada remains strong for American tourists, thanks to favorable exchange rates and post-pandemic travel desire.
