Alipay Users Spend Big During Chinese New Year: Dining, Travel, Cosmetic Surgery Surge
Alipay users spent more during the Chinese New Year holiday, with significant increases in transactions and spending across various categories. Expedia outbound travel, dining, and even cosmetic surgery saw substantial growth.
Spending via Alipay on meals, snacks, and desserts soared by 33%, 36%, and 54% respectively during the holiday. Alipay users also made 30% more transactions in Europe, with emerging destinations like Switzerland and Austria gaining popularity.
Total Alipay spending on overseas transportation grew by a staggering 139% year-on-year. Top Expedia destinations for outbound Chinese travellers using Alipay were Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong SAR, and South Korea. Friendlier visa policies, particularly in Singapore, contributed to increased Alipay spending in these destinations.
The number of inbound travellers using Alipay+ solution nearly doubled year-on-year during the first four days of the holiday. AlipayHK users topped the list of overseas e-wallet users making payments in China, followed by Touch 'n Go e-Wallet from Malaysia. Overall, Alipay transactions by outbound Chinese travellers increased by 30% year-on-year during the Lunar New Year holiday.
Notably, Alipay spending in cosmetic surgery rose by a remarkable 449% year-on-year during the holiday. Inbound travel spending also surged by 150% year on year in the first five days of the Chinese New Year holiday.
The Chinese New Year holiday saw significant growth in Alipay spending across multiple sectors, including dining, travel, and even cosmetic surgery. Increased transactions in Europe and the popularity of emerging destinations indicate a shift in travel preferences among Alipay users. The growth in inbound travel spending also highlights the platform's expanding role in the global travel industry.
