Rome, Italy – The renowned Trevi Fountain in Rome reopened on Sunday following a three-month restoration period, perfectly timed for the commencement of the 2025 Holy Jubilee Year, anticipated to attract millions of tourists.
The restoration process for this 18th-century landmark, considered one of Rome's prime attractions, amounted to 327,000 euros ($341,000).
To prevent overcrowding, no more than 400 guests will be permitted to visit the fountain at a given time.
According to Claudio Parisi Presicce, Rome's custodian for cultural assets, "This strategy will provide visitors ample opportunity to appreciate its significance and the principles it embodies."
In preparation for the influx of visitors during the Holy Jubilee, and to cope with the massive crowd, Rome officials have devised a strategy to secure the area surrounding the fountain.
Visitors will be compelled to book online and pay 2 euros ($2.20) for entry. Upon admission, they will have a thirty-minute window to savor the fountain.
During the restoration, visitors could continue the customary practice of tossing a coin into a temporary pool. Legend has it that tossing a coin into the elegant Baroque fountain guarantees a future visit to Rome.
This custom yields an estimated 1.5 million euros ($1.6 million) annually, which has been channelled to the Catholic charity Caritas for the past 15 years.
