A Gold Rush-era town, once recognized as the global hub for egg production, continues to serve up gastronomic wealth today.
Hungry for History and Deliciousness? Visit Petaluma, a Farm-to-Table Pioneer with a Quirky Twist
Petaluma, California, has been feeding folks for centuries. Back in the Gold Rush days, this town was all about providing eggs, dairy, meat, and veggies to the mining towns nearby and San Francisco. You can still see remnants of that past, with old brick buildings displaying faded "Hatchery" signs, and an annual parade and festival celebrating the town's proud agricultural heritage.
The town's love for food hasn't waned. Today, you'll find everything from buffalo milk ice cream and sourdough bagels to Swedish cuisine and famous craft beer. But there's more to Petaluma than just grub - it's also known for shopping in buildings from the 1800s, hip bars, live music, and a hefty dose of nostalgia.
"Our historic downtown is a quirky, kinda magical place to hang out," said Tom Gaffey, general manager of the Phoenix Theater, an all-ages music venue. "You'll find something fascinating, in particular, really good food, festivals for cheesy reasons, and a very cool weekend music scene."

Petaluma makes an excellent base for exploring the current riches of the region. Think of it as the hub of a pioneer's wagon wheel, with day trip points of interest at the end of each spoke. Head west to Point Reyes National Seashore and Bodega Bay, north to the redwoods around Guerneville, east to wine country, and south for hiking on Mount Tamalpais or the dockside fun of Sausalito – all reachable within an hour, traffic-willing.
"Part of the appeal of Petaluma is the proximity to wine country and the coast, and downtown has charm," said Chris Nardone, one of the owners of Ernie's Tin Bar.
Fuel Up for Adventure
You could spend two weeks in Petaluma and not eat through all the dining options. That's another reason to start and end your days of regional exploration there. Breakfast at the Tea Room Cafe, with its Alice in Wonderland theme and omelets, pancakes, and cookies, is a delightful start. For lunch, don't miss out on Stockhome, a Swedish-Middle Eastern hybrid that serves Wienerschnitzel, halloumi sandwiches, and amazing salads.
On a sunny day, head to Grand Central Petaluma, where you can relax on the lawn with empanadas and a view of the water. If you're in the mood for a sweet treat, Angela's Organic Ice Cream offers a variety of flavors (including vegan and gluten-free), while Brewsters Beer Garden serves up beer, mac and cheese, and brisket, ribs, and sausage combo called the Uncle Buck.

Another old speakeasy, Volpi's, welcomes accordion-playing grandpas to the bar, while Buffalo Billiards offers a spacious pool hall with darts, pinball, and foosball. For a cool hang for teens and tweens, check out The Phoenix Theater, an all-ages nightclub that promises a unique music experience.

Shopping downtown rewards curiosity, with stores like Robindira Unsworth Jewelry, Heebe Jeebe General Store, and Copperfield’s Books.
